THE MONK BY THE SEA (2017)
Romanticizing Caspar David Friedrich’s Dreamy World of Endless Solitude
Produced by HAREHORSE and Chris Cortazzo Malibu Real Estate, “The Monk by the Sea”
is a short fashion film inspired by Caspar David Friedrich’s painting of the same name and
the idea of self-introspection filled with one’s world of dreams and solitude. The film is a
re-imagination of a monk who is standing all alone by himself, watching out over the
endless expanse of the sea, questioning and searching for his soul.
As Kleist once put — it is essential that one has to come to the sea in search of one’s soul,
and that one has to return. That one would like to go over the sea but cannot; that one
misses any signs of life, and yet one senses the voice of life in the rush of the water,
in the blowing of the wind, in the drifting of the clouds, in the lonely cry of the birds.
No situation in the world could be more sad and eerie than this — as the only spark of life
in the wide realm of death is a lonely center in a lonely circle.
The film stars actor Joe Slaughter (Step Up 3D) and model Meagan Lee (LA Models).
Vocalist Julie Elven (World of Warcraft) joins Hamburg-based composer Cis Minor for music.
Celebrity fashion stylist Candice Kao (from The Chriselle Factor) and New York-based
make-up artist Reginald Raphael rounds up the creative team.
